Interior Minister, Sheikh Rasheed, announced the proposed ban on TLP under Pakistan&#8217;s anti-terrorism legislation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>Police arrested TLP chief,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Saad Hussain\u00a0Rizvi, who is the son of TLP&#8217;s deceased founder.\u00a0Rizvi&#8217;s arrest caused\u00a0an uproar amongst TLP leaders and workers. Authorities arrested him in a pre-emptive attempt\u00a0to maintain law and order, since TLP was expected to stage a protest soon if the govt didn&#8217;t honor some commitments it\u00a0made in February.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>These commitments include\u00a0expelling the French ambassador and banning the import of goods from France. TLP lashed out at France\u00a0after French President, Emmanuel Macron, made remarks that were considered &#8220;Islamophobic.&#8221; TLP also claims\u00a0&#8220;blasphemous caricatures&#8221; were published in France.\u00a0However, the govt didn&#8217;t say it would actually enforce TLP&#8217;s demands. The plan was to present their concerns in Parliament by April 20.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>Hard-line Islamic\u00a0preacher, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, founded TLP in 2015. He\u00a0died\u00a0last year\u00a0due to natural causes. TLP\u00a0made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1350111\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-fmcuy-iluykthdp-b\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1618625830772000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE9B6qmumjfRb4mlCIfG6-Zxo3l4A\">headway<\/a>\u00a0during the 2018 election after emerging as the fifth-largest party in Pakistan, and the third largest party in Punjab. The senior Rizvi and his party were vocal supporters of\u00a0Mumtaz Qadri, a\u00a0security guard who shot and killed Punjab Governor,\u00a0Salman Taseer, over blasphemy allegations. TLP is known to be a fierce defender\u00a0of Pakistan&#8217;s strict blasphemy laws. TLP even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/11\/20\/hardline-pakistani-religious-leader-khadim-rizvi-dies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-fmcuy-iluykthdp-n\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1618625830772000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHEJphbxhtHphlzV-W2brC00MJTHQ\">calls\u00a0for violence<\/a>\u00a0against people who\u00a0allegedly commit\u00a0blasphemy against Islam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>The question is, will banning TLP automatically prevent them from organizing disruptive protests? How far will the ban go to impact their activities in the country? It&#8217;s still unclear what this ban will entail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Two political parties quit the opposition alliance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pakistan People&#8217;s Party (PPP) and the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Awami National Party (ANP)\u00a0quit the opposition alliance.\u00a0The opposition alliance is also called the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is president of the opposition alliance\u00a0and leader of the\u00a0Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) party,\u00a0said the PDM can\u00a0continue\u00a0its work\u00a0despite losing two parties. However, he still asked PPP and ANP\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1618060\/fazl-asks-ppp-anp-to-reconsider-decision-of-quitting-pdm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-fmcuy-iluykthdp-p\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1618625830772000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF8JEmvBf5dzzOkk_N3zGNH2HRv2g\">to reconsider<\/a>.\u00a0PPP and ANP got upset after\u00a0receiving\u00a0&#8220;show-cause notices&#8221;\u00a0from the PDM. That&#8217;s when things became PPP and\u00a0ANP vs the PDM (yea we know, too\u00a0many acronyms).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Last year in September, a group of 11 political opposition\u00a0parties came together to form an anti-govt\u00a0alliance. The PDM demanded PM\u00a0Khan&#8217;s resignation and a new election, claiming that a rigged election brought him and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party into power.
