Myanmar refuses to recognize the\u00a0Rohingya people\u00a0as citizens\u00a0and labels them as illegal immigrants. In 2017, thousands of Rohingya people were killed, and more than 700,000 fled to Bangladesh\u00a0after an\u00a0army crackdown.\u00a0Suu Kyi\u00a0denied\u00a0allegations about the army committing genocide, and didn&#8217;t condemn the army&#8217;s actions either.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>Myanmar has a population of about 54 million. The predominant\u00a0religion is Buddhism, and most people speak Burmese. The army ruled Myanmar from 1962 until 2011. In 1989, the ruling military changed the country&#8217;s name from Burma to Myanmar. Suu Kyi\u00a0became famous after campaigning to restore democracy and civilian rule. She spent almost 15 years in detention\u00a0after calling\u00a0for democracy and free elections. She was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2015, Suu Kyi led her\u00a0NLD party\u00a0to victory in\u00a0Myanmar&#8217;s first contested election in 25 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>Hlaing said the army will hold new elections and transfer power to the winner. However, it&#8217;s unclear when these elections will take place. Pakistan&#8217;s foreign ministry commented on the coupin Myanmar. The ministry hopes both sides will &#8220;engage constructively, uphold the rule of law, and work towards a peaceful outcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Lawyers riot at the Islamabad High Court (IHC)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, a\u00a0group of lawyers\u00a0barged into the IHC building to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1606189\/islamabad-lawyers-barge-into-ihc-building-in-protest-against-cdas-operation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aklhhhd-iluykthdp-o\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612983224165000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEf7k--s3PQQVapJ2IGCtPTMstnNw\">protest<\/a>.\u00a0The lawyers were upset because\u00a0the Capitol Development Authority demolished their chambers. The lawyers\u00a0broke windows and shouted slogans against IHC Chief Justice, Athar Minallah, while standing outside his chamber.\u00a0Chief Justice\u00a0Minallah was inside his chamber at the time, and pretty much trapped.\u00a0Police and\u00a0special security forces showed up later, after the lawyers already entered\u00a0the Chief Justice&#8217;s\u00a0block. Police, Rangers and counter-terrorism department officials were deployed to control the situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Now what?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The lawyers have a couple of demands, such as the rebuilding of their\u00a0chambers, and the immediate release of arrested lawyers.\u00a0IHC Justice,\u00a0Mohsin Akhtar\u00a0Kayani, told the lawyers (in other words), &#8216;you need to calm down, screaming at the Chief Justice and damaging his office won&#8217;t solve anything.&#8217; Justice Kiyani\u00a0asked\u00a0the superintendent of police to release the arrested lawyers. He will also\u00a0look into\u00a0who exactly ordered the\u00a0chambers to be torn down. Even though Justice Kiyani\u00a0doesn&#8217;t agree with how the chambers were removed, he said they were &#8220;illegal&#8221; and\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t have been built in front of the court.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"m_1039604976212428416size-18\" lang=\"x-size-18\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4.
