Summing up internet regulation in 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s going on?\u00a0<\/strong>In its 2020\u00a0report, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) states that Pakistan&#8217;s digital economy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1604966\/govt-actively-monitored-internet-during-covid-pta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahhljn-iluykthdp-t\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612377233985000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEWfBiyiRbFeHshzedGvUSCBFz9YQ\">grew exponentially<\/a>\u00a0during the pandemic.\u00a0More than 90 million people in Pakistan reportedly used the internet last year.\u00a0At the same time, the govt made a persistent effort to &#8220;regulate&#8221; the online experience of internet users.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>In 2019-2020, the PTA blocked\u00a0<strong>27,986 items online<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 8,161 over hate speech, 6,910 for religious reasons or &#8220;the glory of Islam,&#8221; 5,237 over decency\/morality concerns, and 5,053 for\u00a0&#8220;the defence of Pakistan.&#8221; The PTA also tried to crack down on pornography, and blocked a list of 2,384 websites.\u00a0Fun fact (or not so fun fact): According to data from Google, Pakistan topped\u00a0the list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/823696\/pakistan-tops-list-of-most-porn-searching-countries-google\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahhljn-iluykthdp-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612377233985000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEnHjYx7bgCPlDtwxTYZkNUMYpZEA\">most porn-searching countries<\/a>\u00a0in 2015.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>The\u00a0PTA noticed a trend of unlawful content being accessed through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Simply put, VPNs are the PTA&#8217;s worst nightmare. VPNs disguise your IP address when you&#8217;re using the internet.\u00a0If you use a VPN to connect to the internet, you can browse websites privately, side-step\u00a0censorship blocks, and gain\u00a0access to restricted websites. In Pakistan, the registration of VPNs is reportedly mandatory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t forget social media:\u00a0<\/strong>How could we forget? PTA approached international social media platforms (e.g. YouTube, Bigo, TikTok) and\u00a0ordered\u00a0them to block &#8220;obscene\u00a0content&#8221; or content that conveyed &#8220;hate speech.&#8221; The PTA said it continuously engaged with social media companies operating outside of Pakistan to keep them up to date on local sensitivities (e.g. religious norms, values), and make sure they follow local laws.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Any other &#8220;regulation&#8221; work?<\/strong>\u00a0The PTA said it&#8217;s\u00a0working on cyber security initiatives to improve the security of Pakistan&#8217;s telecom sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>A lot of &#8220;regulating&#8221; involved restricting access to certain types of content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Christian nurse charged over unproven blasphemy allegations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We covered this story yesterday\u00a0and wrote, &#8220;it&#8217;s unclear if she&#8217;s out of the woods yet.&#8221; It turns out, she&#8217;s\u00a0definitely not.\u00a0A\u00a030-year-old Christian nurse\u00a0at a hospital in Karachi\u00a0was accused of committing blasphemy. The police took the nurse\u00a0into custody,\u00a0didn&#8217;t find any credible evidence that she committed blasphemy, and let her go. However,\u00a0a\u00a0mob of hundreds of Muslims gathered outside the local police station and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.persecution.org\/2021\/01\/29\/christian-nurse-pakistan-falsely-accused-blasphemy-muslim-coworker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahhljn-iluykthdp-d\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612377233985000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGG8RGYkjCVf8gnrnY3j8CK7a3-xA\">forced the police<\/a>\u00a0to file a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pakistanchristianpost.com\/head-line-news-details\/7489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahhljn-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612377233985000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGSO4STKttab9LK2a-91x56E5ziUA\">blasphemy case<\/a>\u00a0against her. Police are still investigating the allegations. The nurse has reportedly gone into hiding.\u00a0According to international human rights groups, people in Pakistan\u00a0often use blasphemy allegations to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rabwah.net\/christian-nurse-charged-with-blasphemy-after-mob-surrounds-police-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahhljn-iluykthdp-k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612377233985000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF0qcyP5d5sdPP-TS1cGEqaXkm3tA\">settle personal feuds or quarrels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The head nurse at the hospital said medical staff can&#8217;t receive tips or deal with money from patients. The accused Christian nurse saw her Muslim coworker collect money from a patient and reminded this coworker about the head nurse&#8217;s orders.\u00a0Then, the Muslim coworker reportedly flung blasphemy accusations at the Christian nurse. What started as a workplace dispute turned into a violent assault on the Christian nurse. Some hospital staff members beat the Christian nurse, tied her up with a rope, and locked her in a room\u00a0&#8211; she has worked at this hospital for nine years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4.
