The SHC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/linked-reporters-murder-stay-prison-pakistan-71571923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahijujk-iluykthdp-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612047739428000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGZgHpFYNd8cBCacpl9s5wbQs8h1w\">set aside<\/a> Sheikh&#8217;s murder conviction and said he&#8217;s\u00a0only guilty of kidnapping Pearl. The SHC sentenced Sheikh\u00a0to seven years in prison for kidnapping instead. However, since Sheikh was\u00a0already in prison for 18 years with a\u00a0death sentence, the SHC decided\u00a0it&#8217;s time to let him go.\u00a0Pearl&#8217;s family and the Pakistani govt filed an appeal in Pakistan&#8217;s Supreme Court to challenge the SHC&#8217;s acquittal of Sheikh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:<\/strong>\u00a0In a handwritten letter, Sheikh actually admitted his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/suspect-role-us-reporters-death-115225482.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahijujk-iluykthdp-d\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612047739428000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFz4XnxTT2pqYJ0wDI-Gghj211N9A\">limited involvement<\/a> in Pearl&#8217;s murder. He insisted that his &#8220;minor role&#8221; still doesn&#8217;t warrant a death sentence. Sheikh&#8217;s defence lawyers\u00a0 claimed\u00a0he&#8217;s a &#8220;scapegoat&#8221; for the murder, and that he was sentenced on &#8220;insufficient evidence.&#8221; However, lawyers for Pearl&#8217;s family argued that Sheikh ordered Pearl&#8217;s captors to kill him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>Pearl was the South Asia Bureau Chief for\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal.\u00a0<\/em>He was doing research on Pakistani militants. In January 2002, Sheikh allegedly lured Pearl into a\u00a0meeting, during which he was kidnapped.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:\u00a0<\/strong>Pearl&#8217;s family is in shock.
