Student protests broke out at various universities in different cities, mostly Lahore. Education Minister, Shafqat Mahmood, stressed that universities should come up with appropriate procedures asap and maintain educational standards while holding online exams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>In a statement, the HEC said universities need to remain &#8220;vigilant&#8221; if resorting to online exams, and apply &#8220;adequate safeguards,&#8221; (i.e. finds ways to supervise students and keep an eye on plagiarism). However, exams for courses that require physical skills (i.e. medicine, engineering, lab work) still need to take place on campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>As we already know, schools across the country shut down campuses\u00a0to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a result, universities implemented &#8220;distance learning&#8221; (i.e. educating students online).<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Students are\u00a0worried about failing\u00a0if they&#8217;re\u00a0forced to take in-person exams on campus. The gruesome incident took place in 2002, while Pearl was researching Pakistani militants. In April last year, the SHC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/linked-reporters-murder-stay-prison-pakistan-71571923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahthddk-iluykthdp-w\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1611959583831000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHghH4RBnO_WUjVhY_pi-BflcLpbA\">set aside<\/a>\u00a0Sheikh&#8217;s murder conviction, and said he&#8217;s\u00a0only guilty of kidnapping Pearl. The SHC sentenced Sheikh\u00a0to seven years in prison for kidnapping instead. However, since Sheikh was\u00a0already in prison for 18 years on death row, the SHC decided\u00a0it&#8217;s time to let him go.\u00a0Pearl&#8217;s family and the Pakistani govt filed an appeal in Pakistan&#8217;s Supreme Court to challenge\u00a0Sheikh&#8217;s acquittal.
