Representatives from the\u00a0Afghan govt and Taliban started direct talks in Doha last year\u00a0to figure out a ceasefire and potential power-sharing agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:<\/strong>\u00a0According to\u00a0the February 2020 agreement, US and allied forces have to leave Afghanistan by May 2021 in exchange for security and counter-terrorism\u00a0guarantees.\u00a0<wbr \/>However, violence has reportedly surged across\u00a0the country since then. Even though Taliban militants aren&#8217;t attacking international forces,\u00a0they&#8217;re reportedly\u00a0still\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-55775522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahjiyiy-iluykthdp-k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1611802976587000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGSlSSnLmqfXsz8n-heR1uhIrAGeQ\">fighting the Afghan govt<\/a>. Then US President, George W. Bush, told the Taliban to deliver\u00a0Osama bin Laden to US authorities, since he masterminded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/timeline\/us-war-afghanistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahjiyiy-iluykthdp-o\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1611802976587000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGARNzdpnqCO3MowY7A3bFp8iUUHw\">September 11\u00a0terrorist attacks<\/a>. When the Taliban said &#8216;nope,&#8217; the US rolled up its sleeves and said, &#8216;we&#8217;re coming for you.&#8217; There has been an ongoing conflict between the Taliban and Afghan govt for years. Military kills five members of the Pakistan Taliban group<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The military reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/1\/25\/pakistan-says-pakistani-taliban-commanders-killed-in-northwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ahjiyiy-iluykthdp-n\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1611802976587000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH4Zx_tiNNjz5HDS12qadWu0_S0Sg\">killed five members<\/a>\u00a0of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (i.e. Pakistan\u00a0Taliban or TTP) militant group in North Waziristan, including senior members Syed Raheem and\u00a0Saifullah Noor. Raheem had\u00a0been involved in\u00a017 attacks against Pakistani security forces since 2007, and was\u00a0behind some targeted killings in North Waziristan. He was apparently running two suicide bomber training centers\u00a0as well. Noor was also involved in attacks on security forces in North Waziristan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0In 2014, Pakistan&#8217;s military launched\u00a0security operations in North Waziristan\u00a0and its adjoining districts to push out Pakistan Taliban militants. The TTP still launches infrequent attacks on civilians and security forces across the country, but these attacks have reportedly decreased since 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"m_7372226908868646276size-18\" lang=\"x-size-18\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4. Pakistani-American attorney makes history<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Saima Mohsin, who was born in Pakistan, is about to\u00a0become a top federal prosecutor in Detroit, Michigan. On February 2, Mohsin will\u00a0begin serving as acting US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan after the current US\u00a0attorney for the district, Matthew Schneider, resigns. What does this mean?
