The court will hear her case on legal grounds, and decide whether it falls under Pakistan&#8217;s laws on harassment in the workplace.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>Shafi initially filed a complaint with the\u00a0Punjab ombudsperson in 2018 under the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/courtingthelaw.com\/2019\/06\/10\/commentary\/anti-harassment-laws-in-pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-addurjy-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1610546179082000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFf8RpBQKYPmRiG6_WIVfqsRxU3pw\">Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0However, the Punjab ombudsperson dismissed\u00a0her plea on a minor technicality. Since Shafi is self-employed,\u00a0and works for herself, she didn&#8217;t have an employer-employee relationship with Zafar. Afterwards, Shafi filed an appeal with the Punjab governor, who ended up siding with the Punjab ombudsperson. Later on, she approached the Lahore High Court (LHC), which also rejected her request.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>In 2018, Shafi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/329357-supreme-court-grants-leave-in-meesha-shafis-workplace-harassment-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-addurjy-iluykthdp-k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1610546179082000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG1YlXVuSTk5LtXJf_pFvWcdYIf6A\">accused<\/a>\u00a0Zafar of sexually harassing her on more than one occasion. She posted her allegations on social media. Zafar has been denying her allegations ever since. He also filed a defamation lawsuit against her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>Shafi&#8217;s supporters think this is a win for her,\u00a0and a step in the right direction. The Supreme Court has agreed to review her workplace sexual harassment case, but hasn&#8217;t made a final decision yet. However, the outcome will\u00a0determine whether Pakistan&#8217;s workplace harassment laws can also protect\u00a0self-employed people. The Supreme Court could possibly broaden the definition of a &#8220;workplace&#8221; as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Moving from cash to digital<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>PM Imran Khan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1600960\/pm-imran-launches-pakistans-first-instant-digital-payment-system-to-boost-formal-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-addurjy-iluykthdp-u\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1610546179082000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF1jgvABIsCY1vOy_-vVeqDtd8kIg\">launched<\/a>\u00a0an instant digital\u00a0payment system called, Raast (i.e. direct way). The govt-run system aims to encourage financial inclusion and boost govt revenue. PM Khan said the country&#8217;s cash-based economy is an obstacle, especially when it comes to tax collection. He&#8217;s trying to further automate the tax collection process and reach more of Pakistan&#8217;s massive population. According to PM Khan, out of a population of 220 million, only 2 million are\u00a0taxpayers.\u00a0Merchants, businesses, individuals, fintechs,\u00a0and govt entities\u00a0will be able to send and receive\u00a0payments with Raast. Govt payments like salaries and pensions can go through Raast.
