The Sindh High Court (SHC) said Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British-Pakistani, has to be released from govt detention by December 27.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>Sheikh and three others were convicted in the kidnapping and murder of Pearl. In April this year, the SHC partially overturned Sheikh&#8217;s conviction and death sentence. Initially, he was sentenced to death for both kidnapping and murder. However, the SHC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/linked-reporters-murder-stay-prison-pakistan-71571923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-adruyky-iluykthdp-q\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609001009064000&amp;usg=AFQjCNELdlmlTitpFuj6BY3j2ELLPNbEqQ\">set aside<\/a>\u00a0Sheikh&#8217;s murder conviction, and said he&#8217;s\u00a0only guilty of kidnapping Pearl. The SHC sentenced him to seven years in prison for kidnapping instead. However, since Sheikh was\u00a0already in prison for 18 years on death row, the SHC decided\u00a0he&#8217;s already done with his\u00a0prison sentence. The SHC also acquitted Sheikh&#8217;s suspected accomplices, who were sentenced to life in prison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>The court keeps saying it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pakistan-court-orders-man-convicted-of-murdering-wall-street-journal-reporter-daniel-pearl-to-be-freed-11608796033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-adruyky-iluykthdp-a\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609001009064000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEmakdBrKqYJq2CR7F-UNi_tIXoQ\">can&#8217;t find any evidence<\/a>\u00a0linking the four men to Pearl&#8217;s murder.\u00a0In July this year, a govt order said Sheikh and his accomplices have to remain in custody for another three months. The govt basically imposed emergency detention powers.\u00a0This detention measure was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/24\/world\/asia\/pakistan-daniel-pearl-release.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-adruyky-iluykthdp-f\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609001009064000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGmxXxXU48jWzKA-dEdPMCh1zAEtA\">extended<\/a> after the three-month deadline. Now the SHC is saying &#8216;enough is enough, this\u00a0continued detention is illegal.&#8217; Pakistan&#8217;s govt and Pearl&#8217;s family separately petitioned the Supreme Court to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pakistans-top-court-to-weigh-reinstating-death-sentence-on-accused-killer-of-wsj-reporter-11601294782?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-adruyky-iluykthdp-z\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609001009064000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHDbDFtK312V0Kn1h4kQNeeGKv7dQ\">hear an appeal\u00a0<\/a>against the SHC&#8217;s April decision. The Supreme Court will hear these appeals on January 5.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>The gruesome incident took place nearly two decades ago. Pearl was a foreign correspondent for\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>when he died. He was doing research on Pakistani militants when he went missing in Karachi on January 23, 2002. Later on, a video of Pearl being beheaded was sent to the US Consulate General in Karachi and posted on the internet. In 2007, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks, told a US military tribunal that he is the one who beheaded Pearl.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>The US State Department issued a statement\u00a0on Thursday, saying it was &#8220;deeply concerned\u00a0about the court&#8217;s decision to release multiple terrorists responsible for the murder of Daniel Pearl.&#8221; However, Pakistani authorities are trying to fight Sheikh&#8217;s\u00a0release. Pakistan is already under international pressure to crack down on terrorist groups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. The all-male board<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The federal cabinet reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2277154\/govt-approves-all-male-ztbl-board\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-adruyky-iluykthdp-v\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609001009064000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG1ngnWoq--n4CSGn2FiFPsGF-OaQ\">approved an all male-board<\/a>\u00a0atZarai Taraqiati\u00a0Bank Limited (ZTBL). This board is apparently in violation of parliament&#8217;s\u00a02017 Companies Act, which states that all public interest companies must have women representation on their boards. ZTBL is a public sector financial institution, and an agricultural development bank that\u00a0works with the farming community.\u00a0The govt itself keeps reaffirming its support for the social and economic empowerment of women. However, the cabinet still went ahead and approved the all-male board. A finance ministry spokesman insisted there&#8217;s no\u00a0legal requirement to appoint a woman on the ZTBL board.
