Their main demand: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has to go. Opposition parties claim to be protesting over\u00a0increased inflation, a weak economy, stifled\u00a0civil liberties, and media censorship.\u00a0Tens of thousands of people showed up to the rally, despite rising COVID-19 cases in the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People&#8217;s Party (PPP), and\u00a0Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F)\u00a0are some of the biggest opposition parties in the alliance.\u00a0In previous rallies,\u00a0PML-N Supremo and former PM, Nawaz Sharif, accused the army and intelligence officials\u00a0of rigging the 2018 election\u00a0that brought PM Khan&#8217;s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)\u00a0govt into power.\u00a0This time, Sharif\u00a0addressed the protest via video and blamed PM Khan for the country&#8217;s problems. Sharif also repeated his accusations against the army.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>Sharif&#8217;s\u00a0daughter, Maryam Nawaz,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1595548\/my-narrative-is-the-same-as-quaid-i-azams-says-nawaz-at-pdms-lahore-power-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aiiilht-iluykthdp-u\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608055540583000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHaUl3WBXiNwHDwnT_fE-F8ZqMvNw\">justified protesting<\/a>\u00a0in the middle of a pandemic\u00a0by saying, &#8220;I value and care for your life, but it&#8217;s important to attend public meetings because COVID-18 (i.e. likely a reference to the 2018 election) is more dangerous than COVID-19.&#8221; PPP Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari,\u00a0accused &#8220;the establishment&#8221; of forming\u00a0govts of their choice (i.e.\u00a0&#8220;establishment&#8221; is usually a reference to the country&#8217;s military and intelligence services).\u00a0JUI-F Chief, Fazlur Rehman, chimed in with accusations about the establishment&#8217;s\u00a0election rigging in 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:\u00a0<\/strong>The govt thinks protestors\u00a0are trying to distract the public from corruption allegations against opposition party leaders. PM Khan called the rally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1595562\/pm-imran-terms-pdm-lahore-public-meeting-pathetic-rules-out-nro-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aiiilht-iluykthdp-o\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608055540583000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEn5p3Gf_ibagUOpjcVOEGrpMIniA\">&#8220;pathetic.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0He accused the opposition alliance of endangering people&#8217;s lives by bringing\u00a0big crowds together during a pandemic. PTI leaders are also playing the &#8216;my rally was bigger than your rally&#8217;\u00a0game. According to PTI, PM Khan organized a rally at Minar-e-Pakistan a few years ago that was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/324105-pdm-vs-govt-how-many-people-gathered-at-minar-e-pakistan-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aiiilht-iluykthdp-b\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608055540583000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE1m3DIsiJJqP7pvuWRG-2dt8SVKQ\">much bigger<\/a>\u00a0than the opposition alliance&#8217;s\u00a0rally, even with their 11 parties\u00a0combined.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>The Pakistan Democratic Movement (i.e. opposition alliance) has been organizing rallies in different cities. These protests are leading up to a &#8220;march on Islamabad&#8221; in January.\u00a0The govt is still not budging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Explosion in Rawalpindi injures 25<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, at least 25 people were reported injured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2275802\/at-least-25-injured-in-rawalpindis-ganj-mandi-blast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aiiilht-iluykthdp-n\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608055540583000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHaHTVI7n4Q_pAJeBu_JuPBEIz3nw\">when a blast went off<\/a>\u00a0near Rawalpindi&#8217;s Ganj Mandi Police Station. This was reportedly the second blast in the city within 10 days.\u00a0The previous blast was also near a police station. However, in both cases, civilians were predominantly the victims.\u00a0This latest blast is a developing situation, and some details are still unclear. For instance, what kind of blast was it? Who was responsible?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4. China helps Pakistan pick up the tab (again)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>China helped Pakistan pay $2 billion in\u00a0debt to Saudi Arabia. China contributed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2275770\/china-again-bails-out-pakistan-to-pay-saudi-debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aiiilht-iluykthdp-p\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608055540583000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEKVtQ01OQ4Blz9qZYp0rhjYn9thA\">$1.5 billion<\/a>\u00a0to the total $2 billion. This\u00a0debt repayment reportedly\u00a0came from\u00a0a bilateral Currency-Swap Agreement (CSA) between Pakistan and China. As of now, the CSA amounts to 10 billion Chinese Yuan (i.e. $4.5 billion). The $1.5 billion from China apparently won&#8217;t count as an extra loan, or debt on Pakistan&#8217;s part. Instead,\u00a0the money is\u00a0being taken out of\u00a0the\u00a0CSA. The State Bank of Pakistan and Finance Ministry didn&#8217;t deny or confirm this development. A state bank spokesperson merely said &#8220;it&#8217;s a bilateral confidential matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>What exactly is a CSA?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Pakistan and China\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2266678\/pak-china-currency-swap-a-cure-for-dollar-dependency#:~:text=KARACHI%3A,on%20the%20dollar%20will%20decrease.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aiiilht-iluykthdp-x\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608055540583000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEB_vw-Vo1T7tt_VZF5sZZ5qJdH3A\">signed a CSA<\/a> in 2011 to strengthen bilateral trade and financial cooperation. As a part\u00a0of the agreement, Pakistani importers can pay for Chinese goods in China&#8217;s currency. Another factor of the agreement was to reduce the need for US dollars in Pakistan.
