They&#8217;re\u00a0requesting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/12\/10\/tech-giants-call-for-changes-to-pakistani-censorship-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aitijdd-iluykthdp-t\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1607833937299000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGl8sgUO2ZBv8toIEJTR41PBZ5zkQ\">&#8220;critical changes&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0to newly passed internet regulations in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>Apparently, a previous version of the internet regulations passed in February 2020, but PM Khan quickly took it back after technology companies and rights groups yelled &#8216;WTH is your problem?&#8217; The govt passed and implemented a\u00a0new version of\u00a0internet regulations in November 2020, without any major changes to the original version.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more<\/strong>: Is the third time really a charm? Apparently not. On December 1, 2020, the govt revised the internet regulations AGAIN\u00a0to remove a clause that banned any criticism of the federal and\u00a0provincial govt, or any public office holders. Rights groups were up in arms about the clause being authoritarian. The AIC is still concerned, since industry stakeholders were not properly involved in the consultation process during all these revisions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>The new regulations make it mandatory for social media companies, who have more than half a million users in Pakistan, to establish offices and data servers in the country. Tech companies also have to share decrypted\u00a0user data (i.e. readable electronic\u00a0info)\u00a0with authorities without a warrant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:\u00a0<\/strong>The govt said it&#8217;s still open to continuing the conversation,\u00a0without compromising content bans. Pakistan\u2019s Information Technology Minister, Amin-ul-Haque, said Pakistan won&#8217;t tolerate hate speech, anti-state content or vulgarity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>Tech companies are not on board with the\u00a0move to localize data, because they think Pakistani citizens won&#8217;t be able to access a\u00a0free and open internet. As for sharing decrypted data, rights groups and tech companies claim this is a violation of standard human rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Main suspect will be tried for rape in child marriage case<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Update on the case involving 13-year old\u00a0Christian girl, Arzoo Raja. She was allegedly abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and married off to a 44-year-old Muslim man. The judicial magistrate&#8217;s court for Karachi&#8217;s South\u00a0district\u00a0recently ordered Raja&#8217;s purported husband, Syed Ali Azhar, to be tried for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1594881\/underage-marriage-court-orders-arzoos-purported-husband-be-tried-for-rape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aitijdd-iluykthdp-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1607833937299000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHGKeHzojLDvpqhekCtzipgO3J89g\">rape and child marriage<\/a>. Azhar\u00a0initially claimed Raja was 18, but that backfired after a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1588780\/underage-marriage-shc-orders-constitution-of-medical-board-to-determine-arzoos-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aitijdd-iluykthdp-d\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1607833937299000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH55kf7ioHIHOCsYDloBrDksZ2u_Q\">medical board<\/a>\u00a0established she was either 13 or 14. The\u00a0Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act states\u00a0the minimum age of marriage is 18. The magistrate\u00a0ordered the registration of a case against the man\u00a0who officiated the wedding, along with other facilitators and witnesses. The\u00a0magistrate also issued non-bailable arrest warrants for absconding suspects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Backstory:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>This case has been going on since October of this year.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1589446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aitijdd-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1607833937299000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEpE7x-57S35JcSmYwAC2Nt1S20CQ\">During previous hearings<\/a>\u00a0in the Sindh High Court (SHC), Raja claimed\u00a0she wasn&#8217;t kidnapped, and willingly married Azhar after converting to Islam. When the SHC asked Raja if she wanted\u00a0to go with her parents or to a\u00a0shelter home, she insisted on going with Azhar. However, the court noted that she was\u00a0underage, and doesn&#8217;t have the free will to get married on her own.\u00a0The SHC\u00a0ordered police to\u00a0temporarily place\u00a0Raja\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1589446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aitijdd-iluykthdp-k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1607833937299000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF0gT8KPOac3_fnO91VPqsI65eQEg\">a shelter home<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4.
