The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) accused\u00a0Rehman of\u00a0illegally acquiring plots of\u00a0land in Lahore 34 years ago, and arrested him in March 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>Rehman&#8217;s\u00a0legal counsel,\u00a0Amjad Pervaiz, called\u00a0the charges against his client &#8220;trumped up.&#8221;\u00a0Pervaiz also doesn&#8217;t get why:\u00a01) the same reference was filed against four people, but Rehman was the only one detained, and 2) Rehman was taken into custody during the inquiry stage. He is a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, and also\u00a0former PM Nawaz Sharif&#8217;s son-in-law.\u00a0Safdar\u00a0was charged for allegedly violating the sanctity of Muhammad Ali Jinnah&#8217;s (i.e.\u00a0Quaid-i-Azam\u2019s)\u00a0<wbr \/>mausoleum. He was arrested\u00a0a day after\u00a0raising anti-govt slogans\u00a0at the\u00a0mausoleum. He was released hours later, but not without a lot of controversy surrounding\u00a0his arrest.\u00a0Weeks later, police are claiming the case against Safdar was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2271712\/police-declare-case-against-safdar-false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ajdhryd-iluykthdp-o\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605115022394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGYxlr0AQeZLd5Gas76V26iDrctjg\">false<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Backstory:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>In October,\u00a0Sindh&#8217;s Chief Minister claimed that\u00a0lawmakers from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1586080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ajdhryd-iluykthdp-b\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605115022394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFgJwtbHxWb7gvGIiNhI-CI-NoJ6w\">unlawfully pressured<\/a>\u00a0the Sindh police into filing a case against\u00a0Safdar. Waqas Ahmed Khan,\u00a0who filed the First Information Report (FIR) report, is reportedly the nephew of a PTI leader. In the FIR, Khan said he\u00a0tried to intervene while Safdar chanted slogans at the\u00a0mausoleum. Khan also alleged that Safdar damaged property and threatened him. However, it turns out that Khan wasn&#8217;t even at the mausoleum, so there isn&#8217;t enough evidence to prove his allegations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4. Medical board reveals Arzoo Raja is underage<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>During a hearing last week, the Sindh High\u00a0Court (SHC) ordered a medical board to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1588780\/underage-marriage-shc-orders-constitution-of-medical-board-to-determine-arzoos-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ajdhryd-iluykthdp-n\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605115022394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGOn60hpoi6_ljfXN_glSpFJ9uegw\">figure out\u00a0Arzoo\u00a0Raja&#8217;s real age<\/a>.\u00a0Raja\u00a0is a Christian girl\u00a0who was allegedly abducted, forcibly married, and forcibly\u00a0converted to Islam.\u00a0Her parents and a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) record claim she is 13-years-old. Her\u00a0<span class=\"il\">new<\/span>\u00a044-year old Muslim husband, Ali Azhar, shared a marriage certificate that\u00a0shows\u00a0she&#8217;s 18-years-old. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1589446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ajdhryd-iluykthdp-p\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605115022394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEL1cFb_4LfVU8zm2mDLuUmAtRSbg\">medical board<\/a>\u00a0recently told the SHC that Raja is\u00a0around 14 years old.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Raja&#8217;s parents reported their daughter had gone missing from their home in Karachi. Police said she married Azhar, and\u00a0\u201cwillingly\u201d converted to Islam. According to the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, the minimum age of marriage is 18. At first,\u00a0the SHC cited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/pakistan-catholics-protest-after-abduction-forced-marriage-of-13-year-old-arzoo-raja-67188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ajdhryd-iluykthdp-x\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605115022394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFXjWZ0xHJt3W7boAEkMLzAnHyf3Q\">Sharia<\/a>\u00a0law and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.persecution.org\/2020\/10\/29\/pakistani-court-validates-marriage-christian-teen-44-year-old-muslim-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-ajdhryd-iluykthdp-m\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605115022394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHlfWzHY4gutpYgZNOd1DN0Sbu6Vg\">ruled in favor of the\u00a0marriage<\/a>\u00a0(i.e. under this interpretation of Sharia law, a child can apparently be married after her first menstrual period). Later on, the SHC ordered police to\u00a0temporarily place\u00a0Raja\u00a0in a shelter home and take Azhar into custody.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Now what?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>During previous hearings and yesterday&#8217;s hearing, Raja said she wasn&#8217;t kidnapped, and willingly married Azhar after converting to Islam. Yesterday, when the court asked Raja if she wanted\u00a0to go with her parents or to the shelter home, she insisted on going with Azhar and started crying. However, the court noted that she was\u00a0underage, and doesn&#8217;t have the free will to get married on her own.
