Sindh police request leave after controversial arrest<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s going on?\u00a0<\/strong>Following the arrest of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader,\u00a0retired Captain Muhammad Safdar, a group of Senior Sindh police officials applied for leave since they&#8217;re reportedly\u00a0in shock over the First Information Report (FIR) registered against Safdar. According to the leave applications,\u00a0high ranking police officials were ridiculed and mishandled. Officials requesting leave also claimed that\u00a0all ranks of the Sindh police are feeling demoralized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>Early Monday morning, PML-N VP, Maryam Nawaz, tweeted that police broke the door of their hotel room in Karachi and arrested her husband, Safdar.\u00a0Safdar was arrested a day after\u00a0raising anti-govt slogans\u00a0at\u00a0Muhammad Ali Jinnah&#8217;s (i.e.\u00a0Quaid-i-Azam\u2019s) mausoleum. Safdar apparently jumped inside\u00a0the perimeter of\u00a0Jinnah&#8217;s resting place and chanted slogans. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/313979-mazar-e-quaid-sanctity-what-does-the-law-of-mausoleum-says-about-public-demonstrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aydjrdl-iluykthdp-j\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1603384868082000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHY74zaxlmCeFRI6gmVjOXTGqSlPA\">The Quaid-e-Azam\u00a0Mazar (Protection and Maintenance) Ordinance<\/a>, that is not okay. An FIR\u00a0was registered against Nawaz, Safdar and 200 others for allegedly violating the sanctity of Jinnah&#8217;s\u00a0mausoleum.\u00a0Safdar was released on bail hours after his arrest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>After Safdar&#8217;s arrest, a journalist reportedly shared a voice message by PML-N leader and former Sindh governor, Muhammad Zubair. In the message, Zubair alleged that the Inspector\u00a0General (IG) of police was kidnapped and forced to register the FIR.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>During a media briefing, Sindh Chief Minister (CM), Murad Ali Shah, said Waqas Ahmed (i.e. the guy who filed an FIR against Safdar), was working with PTI lawmakers. Ahmed alleged that he tried to intervene and stop Safdar from sloganeering inside the mausoleum, but Safdar didn&#8217;t listen and started threatening\u00a0him. According to CM Shah, Ahmed\u00a0gave the police false info, because he\u00a0wasn&#8217;t even at the mausoleum during that time.\u00a0CM Shah went on to claim that PTI lawmakers\u00a0unlawfully pressured the police into lodging a case against Safdar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:\u00a0<\/strong>The Pakistan People&#8217;s Party (PPP) led Sindh govt said they didn&#8217;t have anything to do with Safdar&#8217;s arrest.\u00a0PPP Chairperson, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari,\u00a0Army Chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and CM Shah visited the Sindh IG to talk things over. Sindh&#8217;s IG appreciated their gesture and\u00a0decided to defer his leave, while ordering his officers to do the same.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>A ministerial committee will investigate Safdar&#8217;s arrest.\u00a0Allegations surrounding the arrest are still unclear and unconfirmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3. Update on the Hafeez Center fire<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A few days ago, a massive fire broke out at Lahore&#8217;s Hafeez Center, which blazed on for around 15 hours. The police and district administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1586013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aydjrdl-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1603384868082000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEaXGVal78togXwTaJM6U8hWF_T8Q\">sealed the plaza<\/a>, declaring it &#8220;dangerous for business or other use.&#8221; The four story building is a well-known market for computer accessories and mobile phones. The fire destroyed several shops. Shopkeepers are reportedly confronting losses worth millions of rupees. A lot of these shopkeepers don&#8217;t have insurance either. So far, authorities think a short circuit caused the fire, but an investigation is underway. There was apparently not enough fire-fighting equipment in the building (e.g. sprinklers)\u00a0that could have helped stop the fire.
