This is also a Pakistani official&#8217;s first interview with\u00a0Indian media since August 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>On August 5, 2019,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>India&#8217;s Hindu nationalist govt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-53646322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aetddk-iluykthdp-u\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602780466198000&amp;usg=AFQjCNElfo3O8S8dkhvqOnw1fzqdJ_MphA\">revoked Article 370<\/a>, a part of the constitution that gave India-controlled Kashmir (i.e. Jammu and Kashmir) some measure of\u00a0autonomy within India.\u00a0The removal of Article 370 struck a nerve with Pakistan, because Kashmir is disputed territory. Pakistan and India both claim Kashmir in full, but only control parts of it. Pakistan also raised concerns about the fate of Muslims in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s a breakdown of the 75-minute interview, you&#8217;re welcome:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Kashmir:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Thapar and Yusuf obviously sparred over Kashmir, and the removal of Article 370. Thapar argued that India&#8217;s constitutional changes in Jammu\u00a0and Kashmir are strictly an internal Indian matter, and no concern to Pakistan. In response, Yusuf said the world is calling India out, and that Kashmiris don&#8217;t want to be Indian. In return,\u00a0Thapar accused Pakistan of demographically engineering Pakistan-controlled Kashmir by bringing in Punjabi settlers for decades. Yusuf said Pakistan is all for Kashmir&#8217;s right to self-determination. Thapar asked if Pakistan is ready\u00a0for Kashmir to be completely independent. Dr. Yusuf said &#8216;we&#8217;ll cross that bridge when it comes.&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Gilgit Baltistan (GB):<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>Thapar said, &#8216;err pot calling the kettle black?&#8217; Thapar suggested that Pakistan is annexing\u00a0GB. GB is a portion\u00a0of Kashmir that is also an administrative territory of Pakistan. However, India\u00a0claims that\u00a0GB is a part of Indian territory. Now, Pakistan is looking to make GB\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2020\/10\/12\/gilgit-baltistan-election-pakistan-india-kashmir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aetddk-iluykthdp-o\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602780466198000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEHcNDNEiKBB00o313h_S0N5cHP0Q\">a full-fledged province<\/a>, and India is thinking &#8216;seriously?&#8217; However, Yusuf said nothing is confirmed yet. He also claimed that people in GB want to be\u00a0fully integrated into Pakistan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Uighurs in China:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Thapar\u00a0asked why PM Khan is ignoring the alleged mistreatment\u00a0of Muslim\u00a0Uighurs in China, while\u00a0lashing out at India for allegedly committing a genocide against Muslims in Kashmir.\u00a0In response, Yusuf said\u00a0China and Pakistan are friends, and have a transparent relationship. He also claimed that\u00a0Uighurs are a &#8220;non-issue&#8221; and that &#8220;we know everything we need to know about Uighurs,&#8221; even though PM Khan said\u00a0he doesn&#8217;t know enough about the Uighur issue in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uyghurcongress\/videos\/962253500626991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aetddk-iluykthdp-b\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602780466198000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHNT10rnB3f66aAcXYwCf1bMHgrKg\">previous interview<\/a>. When Thapar brought up that interview, Yusuf said PM Khan has been fully briefed now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Kulbhushan\u00a0Jadhav<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Former Indian Naval Commander, Jadhav,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was convicted of espionage by a Pakistani military court. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Pakistan to halt\u00a0Jadhav&#8217;s execution, grant India consular access, and review\u00a0Jadhav&#8217;s\u00a0death penalty. However,\u00a0Jadhav\u00a0is still in Pakistan&#8217;s custody. Thapar asked why Jadhav isn&#8217;t getting unimpeded consular access? In response, Yusuf said Jadhav had unimpeded consular access twice. Thapar thinks this heavily monitored consular access was bogus. India&#8217;s govt also wants an\u00a0Indian lawyer to represent Jadhav, which Yusuf said\u00a0isn&#8217;t doable under Pakistani law. Thapar suggested that having a\u00a0Pakistani lawyer represent Jadhav is practically a death sentence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The &#8216;sponsored terrorism&#8217; blame game:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>According to Thapar, there are concerns about\u00a0Pakistan&#8217;s govt not\u00a0taking\u00a0action against Pakistani citizens involved in terror operations in India. Yusuf said, &#8216;I&#8217;m ready to change\u00a0this one-sided story,&#8217; and alleged that\u00a0Indian Embassy funds were used to affect\u00a0a merger between the Pakistani Taliban and four other organizations. Yusuf proceeded to give\u00a0examples of how India was allegedly behind terrorist activity in Pakistan. Thapar and Yusuf didn&#8217;t see eye-to-eye here.\u00a0Thapar kept saying &#8216;stop deflecting.&#8217; Yusuf kept saying, &#8216;man, let me answer.&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0At the end of the interview, Yusuf claimed that, in the past year, Pakistan has gotten messages about a desire\u00a0for conversation.\u00a0Thapar&#8217;s ears perked up at this remark. He really wanted to know who exactly conveyed this message to Pakistan, and how Pakistan\u00a0got the message, but Yusuf didn&#8217;t specify.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>The point of the interview was to figure out how Pakistan and India can move forward. At the same time, Thapar and Yusuf debated over several key issues between both countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Investigating the closure of PIA-owned Roosevelt Hotel<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairperson,\u00a0Justice retired Javed Iqbal,\u00a0has taken notice of the NYC-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1584852\/nab-to-investigate-closure-of-roosevelt-hotel-losses-borne-by-govt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aetddk-iluykthdp-n\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602780466198000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE7jO4-CR6MxZePOrKSsNaVX8Mwnw\">Roosevelt Hotel shutting down<\/a>.\u00a0Iqbal wants to know why this &#8220;national asset&#8221; has decided to close. There were apparently major financial losses, and NAB wants to call out &#8220;careless officials.&#8221;\u00a0Iqbal&#8217;s statement came after the Roosevelt Hotel announced it will shut its doors permanently on October 31. Pakistan needs to decide whether it wants to sell the hotel, or convert it into a condominium.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The Roosevelt Hotel has been around since 1924. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) leased the hotel in 1979 through its investment arm, PIA Investments Ltd, with an option to buy the building after 20 years. In 1999, PIA bought the hotel for $36.5 million. The hotel was reportedly doing alright\u00a0until 2018. However, COVID-19 hit the tourism and hotel industry pretty hard, including the Roosevelt Hotel. Plus, the hotel&#8217;s infrastructure and rooms haven&#8217;t been\u00a0in good shape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>60-year-old stuntman allegedly marries minor girl<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A well-known Pakistani stuntman named Sultan Muhammad Golden is facing\u00a0some legal trouble in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
