A relative in Gujranwala told her to call the police helpline, and was on his way to help. However, before the relative reached her, two armed men took her and her children to a nearby field at gunpoint and gang-raped her. The robbers also snatched\u00a0her cash, jewellery and other valuables.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Where were the police?\u00a0<\/strong>As for the helpline, police claim she hadn\u2019t called by the time the armed men showed up. However, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/09\/pakistan-police-hunt-gang-rape-suspects-protests-continue-200913061221699.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-t\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399658000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHhE1nCYU7IBzgZSTLy9iug8SKzbA\"><em>Al Jazeera<\/em><\/a>, she phoned the police for help, but the two armed men got to her first.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) in Lahore, Muhammad Umar Sheikh, suggested that her own actions got her into trouble. He also said the woman, who is a French citizen, thought she was in France and not Pakistan where society is different.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Public outrage:\u00a0<\/strong>Over the weekend, Aurat March (i.e. women&#8217;s march)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1579303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399658000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFIBtnJGlNYKs-BufYGRyWwWXRIcg\">organized protests<\/a>\u00a0across Pakistan. Protesters accused CCPO Sheikh of victim-blaming and demanded his\u00a0removal. They also demanded justice, accountability, safety for women, and structural reform to end patriarchal violence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:\u00a0<\/strong>Police identified two suspects, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2263804\/motorway-gang-rape-prime-suspect-appears-before-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-d\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHmwg-fIPrP4zfpGJz4hGt6R6Y1KA\">arrested\u00a0<\/a>one of them. The arrested\u00a0suspect, Waqarul Hassan, denied\u00a0his involvement in the rape case. He reportedly\u00a0turned himself in\u00a0to plead his innocence. However, police are saying he did not surrender and was actually arrested. The police\u00a0used mobile phone records to track him, but Hassan claimed the\u00a0SIM card registered under his name belongs to his brother-in-law, Abbas. Police used DNA tracing and evidence from the crime scene to identify the other suspect, Abid Ali. Ali was reportedly involved in a similar case registered a few years ago. Ali&#8217;s phone records reportedly led police to Hassan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>International rights organizations claim\u00a0that Pakistan\u00a0has not done enough to reduce violence against women, especially when it comes to holding perpetrators accountable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Petitions\u00a0to\u00a0abolish\u00a0<wbr \/>virginity test for sexual assault survivors<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is something called a two-finger test (i.e. hymen\u00a0test), which is conducted to examine sexual assault survivors. This virginity test\u00a0measures the size and elasticity of female\u00a0genitalia.\u00a0Two petitions against the test called it\u00a0&#8220;intrusive&#8221; &#8220;demeaning&#8221; &#8220;inhuman&#8221; and &#8220;violative.&#8221; Recently, provincial health authorities in Punjab told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that the medical evaluation of\u00a0sexual assault survivors will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1579243\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHR9UY3BvpfHCvipoiNAt_MjkTfTw\">no longer require<\/a>\u00a0the test,\u00a0since it\u00a0has little scientific merit. Also,\u00a0the appearance of a hymen is not a reliable indication of intercourse.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The two-finger test\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/images.dawn.com\/news\/1184919#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20demands%20of,states%20the%20charter%20of%20demands.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGh-yiNcmqoG3cAOacJIuX_iX2gaA\">continues to traumatize<\/a>\u00a0rape survivors in Pakistan.<em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u200bHealthcare professionals and human rights organizations around the world have reportedly urged Pakistan to stop the outdated test. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/reproductivehealth\/virginity-testing-elimination\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-u\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGPGXXC-cuXBlEM592cVJZ1BiKzrg\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>, it violates a sexual assault survivor&#8217;s human rights. It also\u00a0negatively impacts a woman&#8217;s physical, psychological, and social well-being. Since the\u00a0test almost mimics the original act of sexual violence, survivors\u00a0could re-experience the\u00a0traumatic event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>The two-finger test has been used to determine &#8216;consent&#8217; in rape cases:<\/strong><\/em>The test has backfired on women survivors\u00a0due to gender biases, presumptions about character,\u00a0and unscientific conclusions.\u00a0For example, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1377364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-o\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG29uXnfMQelp5jds6rTcGSmSmQzg\">Naveed Masih vs. The State 2008<\/a>, the LHC didn&#8217;t believe\u00a0a\u00a0survivor&#8217;s testimony, because the\u00a0test revealed that her hymen admitted two fingers &#8220;easily.&#8221; This supposedly indicates\u00a0that she has been sexually active before.\u00a0If her hymen had been\u00a0&#8220;tight&#8221; that would mean she experienced intercourse for the first time while being raped. Basically, the LHC assumed that\u00a0a\u00a0woman with a sexual history will always give her consent, and can&#8217;t call the intercourse\u00a0&#8216;rape.&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>Massive anti-Shia protest in Karachi<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the same weekend as the anti-rape protests, extremist islamic groups,\u00a0Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), held a huge rally in Karachi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nayadaur.tv\/2020\/09\/extremist-outfits-hold-anti-shia-rally-in-karachi-pelt-stones-at-imambargah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-b\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHSsbD154XXWqPOCUnwm-kGrVI_rg\">against the minority Shia community<\/a>.\u00a0Throngs of people\u00a0chanted slogans against Shias, calling them\u00a0<em>kaafirs\u00a0<\/em>(i.e. infidels). Protesters also threw stones at an Imam Bargah\u00a0(i.e. congregation hall for Shia commemoration ceremonies). Pakistani singer, songwriter and actor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mangobaaz.com\/asim-azhar-has-asked-pm-imran-khan-to-take-notice-of-the-movement-against-the-shia-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aldtdiy-iluykthdp-n\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1600190399659000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGLCERZwdKcB1EsHBRYsDhPXp_xug\">Asim Azhar<\/a>, asked Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan to\u00a0take notice of the brazen\u00a0religious intolerance in Pakistan.
