Pakistan also conducted\u00a0<strong>23,521\u00a0tests<\/strong> in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on September 09 at 8:22am)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Pakistani Christian sentenced to death for alleged blasphemy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s going on?\u00a0<\/strong>Asif Pervaiz, who has been in custody since 2013, was recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/09\/pakistan-christian-man-sentenced-death-blasphemous-texts-200908105308005.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-altaht-iluykthdp-j\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1599758390226000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH8u2MTqYZQYLBq-DgjsfYnK7CZ-g\">given the death penalty<\/a>\u00a0for allegedly sending blasphemous text messages (i.e. derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad PBUH).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>A court in Lahore sentenced the 37-year-old Christian man to death. He was accused of sending blasphemous text messages to Muhammad Saeed Khokher, a former supervisor at work. Khokher is the complainant in the case. Pervaiz worked under Khokher at a hosiery factory. Pervaiz denied the blasphemy accusations against him, and said Khokher was trying to make him convert to Islam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>Khokher\u2019s lawyer also spoke up to defend his client, and said other Christian employees at the factory haven\u2019t accused Khokher of trying to convert them. Khokher also said \u2018not true\u2019 to Pervaiz\u2019s allegations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:\u00a0<\/strong>The court rejected Pervaiz\u2019s testimony. The court said Pervaiz will serve a three year prison term for misusing his phone to send the offensive text messages, and then be hanged. He was also fined PKR 50,000 (i.e. USD 300).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:\u00a0<\/strong>According to Pakistan\u2019s strict blasphemy laws, anyone who insults the Prophet gets the death penalty. There are also other punishments for people who insult Islam, the holy Quran, or certain holy people.
