At the same time, if dual nationals actually win, they have to give up their other country\u2019s citizenship before being sworn in. On the other hand, the opposition Pakistan People\u2019s Party (PPP) is saying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2262888\/ppp-seeks-to-stop-dual-nationals-from-becoming-civil-servants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aljiudt-iluykthdp-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1599664307355000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHSoZFz3cBHNxU8WD9S3eZLadW6eQ\">\u2018not so fast.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong>\u00a0PPP is reportedly trying to stop dual nationals from getting appointed as civil servants. Some PPP leaders submitted a bill in the National Assembly that aims to amend\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/anf.gov.pk\/library\/law\/pakistan_civil_servants_act_1973_eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aljiudt-iluykthdp-d\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1599664307355000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH-d65rhgeZ3sgXsSZKAENmC437zw\">Section 5 of the Civil Servants Act 1973<\/a>. Section 5 of the Civil Servants Act currently states that the president, or a person the president authorizes, can prescribe appointments to an all-Pakistan service, a civil service, or a civil post in connection with the federation and defence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>PPP thinks govt servants who are dual nationals will make the country vulnerable, put the country\u2019s interests at stake, and probably leave to avoid accountability. PPP\u2019s bill is plugging in the following condition: \u201c&#8230;a civil servant holding dual nationality or citizenship of any foreign country shall not be entitled for appointment.\u201d PPP lawmakers think their bill will ensure the loyalty of govt servants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>PTI\u2019s legislation suggests that dual nationals can at least contest the elections without the risk or uncertainty of giving up their dual nationality for nothing in case they lose. Even though PTI\u2019s legislation aims to increase the participation of overseas Pakistanis in the country\u2019s political landscape, it still doesn\u2019t let dual nationals serve as lawmakers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>High court stays deportation of US blogger<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Pakistan\u2019s interior ministry ordered American blogger, Cynthia Ritchie, to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweekpakistan.com\/cynthia-ritchie-directed-to-leave-pakistan-within-15-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aljiudt-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1599664307356000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGPEQ7qgFselN6EsfmYx-X1rf5Kzg\">\u00a0leave Pakistan within 15 days<\/a>. The ministry rejected her request to extend her business visa. Ritchie claims that ministry officials didn\u2019t give her a reason, even though she gave them all the relevant documents. Yesterday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1578391\/ihc-stays-interior-ministry-order-asking-us-blogger-to-leave-pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-aljiudt-iluykthdp-k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1599664307356000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGphgRxivhyw0y8hFQgW5WdCpwJBw\">stayed<\/a>\u00a0(i.e. suspended) the interior ministry\u2019s decision to deport Ritchie. The court asked Ritchie to submit an affidavit explaining her grievances before the next hearing. The court also issued notices to the interior secretary and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)\u2019s director general.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Backstory:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The American blogger and filmmaker has lived in Pakistan for around a decade. While in Pakistan, she worked for the KP province\u2019s health ministry. She began working for PM Imran Khan\u2019s PTI party in 2011. Even though she reportedly gets along with Pakistan\u2019s security forces, she denies working for any security agency inside or outside of Pakistan.
