It looks like COVID-19 cases are rising in KP&#8217;s tourist spots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>2.<\/strong><strong>Sweeping sanctions against the Afghan Taliban<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s going on?\u00a0<\/strong>Pakistan issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/08\/pakistan-sanctions-taliban-avoid-global-finance-blacklist-200822151917665.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-quiujtt-iluykthdp-t\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1598379850849000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFUeq8BiKS2sfs3HBl7JqU_JNUtMQ\">financial sanctions<\/a>\u00a0against Afghanistan&#8217;s Taliban insurgent group. The order includes dozens of individuals, such as the Taliban&#8217;s chief peace negotiator, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.\u00a0Pakistan&#8217;s list of sanctioned groups also includes Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and TTP (i.e. the Pakistan Taliban).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>According to security officials who chose to remain\u00a0anonymous,Pakistan ordered sanctions\u00a0to avoid being blacklisted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which monitors money laundering and tracks the activities of terrorist groups. The FATF wants Pakistan to ramp up its regulation of money laundering and terrorist financing. Right now, Pakistan is on the FATF&#8217;s grey list (i.e. the warning list).\u00a0A spot on the\u00a0blacklist could wreck Pakistan&#8217;s international borrowing capabilities. However, Pakistan&#8217;s foreign ministry suggested that sanctions were simply in line with a list of\u00a0UN designated individuals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The context:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Rapid-fire history lesson:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Pakistan and the Taliban have a long history together. With\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounder\/taliban-afghanistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-quiujtt-iluykthdp-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1598379850850000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFXzMf9ozT7BcLzdRtmUgjOO2uRHQ\">covert backing<\/a>\u00a0from US and Pakistani intelligence agencies, the Afghan mujahideen (i.e. Islamic guerilla fighters) banded together to resist the Soviet\u00a0occupation of Afghanistan in the 1970s-80s. Later on, the mujahideen became the Taliban.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Pakistan\u00a0and the Afghan Taliban:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Pakistan was reportedly one of the only three countries, along with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-south-asia-11451718\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-quiujtt-iluykthdp-d\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1598379850850000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGlU1f8UI1cxYZIx6nSwV_hlMePsg\">recognized<\/a>\u00a0the Taliban govt when it\u00a0ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.\u00a0Afghanistan and the US constantly accuse Pakistan of giving the Taliban a safe haven after a US-led coalition pushed them out of power in 2001. However, Pakistan always says &#8216;untrue.&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>US-Taliban peace talks:<\/em><\/strong>The US leaned on Pakistan\u00a0to help facilitate\u00a0peace negotiations with the Taliban. In February this year, the US and Taliban signed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/08\/16\/902977014\/peach-talks-between-afghanistan-taliban-expected-to-begin-soon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-quiujtt-iluykthdp-h\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1598379850850000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHCDbUlINc13EFhNqR0YZEbn4g-Gw\">peace deal<\/a>. As a part of the deal, the US will end its military engagement in Afghanistan after more than four decades of war. In return, the Taliban\u00a0promised not to\u00a0attack the US and NATO troops, or shelter militants like Al-Qaeda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Intra-Afghan negotiations:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0The US is also trying to kickstart direct peace talks between the\u00a0Taliban and Afghan govt. Very long story short, the Taliban and Afghan govt have been in fight mode\u00a0for 20-something years. The US wants to make sure Afghanistan doesn&#8217;t go up in flames due to internal conflict and instability after withdrawing all of its troops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>In addition to being wary of the FATF blacklist, there&#8217;s a chance Pakistan implemented sanctions on the Taliban as a pressure tactic to make sure they give the Afghan govt some face-time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3.<\/strong><strong>Karachi&#8217;s relentless monsoon season<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, at least seven people were killed in rain-related incidents.
