- Etihad extends suspension on flights from Pakistan: The UAE’s national carrier, Etihad Airways, is extending a suspension on flight operations from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh until July 31 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In a tweet, a traveler who wanted to fly from Lahore to Toronto via Abu Dhabi asked Etihad why flights from Pakistan are still being canceled after July 21, and Etihad responded saying flights from Pakistan to the UAE are still suspended. Only diplomats, UAE nationals, or Golden Visa holders are exempt from the UAE’s flight suspensions, but they still need to take a PCR COVID-19 test before their flight’s departure. Since June 3, UAE airlines have been “scaling back” flights to Pakistan as the country continues to limit the number of inbound international passengers. Pakistan’s government started putting a cap on the number of arrivals in May.
- Vaccinations at Karachi Expo Centre suspended over non-payment of salaries: Although COVID-19 cases have been surging across the country, the vaccination process at Karachi Expo Centre was halted Saturday by staff protesting nonpayment of salaries. Data entry operators — who are hired by a third party and not through the health department as doctors and nurses are — claimed they had not been paid their salaries in three months. The health department has requested the third party to see to the matter soon, and the staff’s strike ended when they were reassured their issues would be looked into.
2. Pakistan reopens the Afghan border with Chaman: Pakistan reopened the Chaman border with Afghanistan to allow several thousand Afghan nationals to return to their country to celebrate Eid Ul Azha. Pakistan shut its border at Chaman when the Taliban reportedly took over Spin Boldak — the second most important border crossing between the two countries — last week, leaving thousands of Afghans stranded in Pakistani territory. Afghans were allowed to cross over into their territory on “humanitarian grounds,” according to Assistant Commissioner Arif Kakkar. He added that Taliban officials allowed around 150 Pakistanis to cross into Pakistan from the Afghan border town of Wesh where they had been stranded.
