2. Proposed bill to make marriage at 18 compulsory
What’s going on? Sindh provincial assembly member from Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Syed Abdul Rasheed, submitted a draft of a bill to make marriage compulsory for people who are 18 years old. Rasheed presented the draft bill to the Sindh Assembly. MMA is an alliance of religious-political parties.
The details: Parents who do not get their children married off by 18 have to pay a fine of PKR 500 each. Parents will also have to provide a justification or reason for any “delay” in getting their kids married at 18, and present their explanation to the District Commissioner. We wonder if ‘they’re still too young,’ ‘they’re not even done with college’ or ‘they’re still not financially independent’ will be considered valid reasons for children who don’t get married when they turn 18.
Tell me more: The proposed bill claims this ‘mandatory marriage at 18’ requirement will bring “well-being” to society. Rasheed argued that the bill will also bring “progress,” “happiness,” and “positive pathways” in a country where “societal ills” like “child rape” and other “immoral activities” are on the rise.
Looking ahead: Sindh Assembly members still need to approve the bill, so this isn’t set in stone yet. It’s unclear how assembly members responded to the draft.
The bottom line: The bill is trying to suggest that marriage is the solution to sexual crimes and alleged immoral activities in Pakistan. The bill is also presuming that marriage will bring automatic “happiness.”
3. A “male only” job posting
The Shaheed Allah Bux Soomro University of Art, Design and Heritage in Jamshoro recently published an ad for a vacant Vice-Chancellor position. However, they reportedly only wanted male applicants for reasons that are unclear. Dr. Arfana Mallah, a professor at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, shared a photo of the ad on Twitter. It looks like the ad was published in Daily Kawish Hyderabad and written in Sindhi. According to Dr. Mallah, the ad categorically says only male professors are eligible to apply. A bullet-point in an English version of the ad reads, “he should qualify as professor as per HEC criteria,” which also suggests the role is only available to males. Using the pronoun “they” would have been more gender inclusive. Critics on social media called the ad “discriminatory,” “misogynistic” and “against gender equality.”
